Professor Bogus艂aw 艢liwerski graduated in Pedagogy from the Faculty of Philosophy and History at the University of 艁贸d藕 in 1977. From 1977 to 2008 he was employed as an academic staff member at the University of 艁贸d藕, where he completed all stages of academic promotion, holding successively the positions of assistant lecturer (1977鈥1984), assistant professor (1985鈥1993), habilitated doctor/assistant professor (1993鈥1996), habilitated doctor and associate professor of the University of 艁贸d藕 (1996鈥1999), and full professor of the University of 艁贸d藕 (2000鈥2008).
In the years 2004鈥2010 he served as Rector of the Higher School of Pedagogy in 艁贸d藕. From 2010 to 2015 he co-founded the Faculty of Education at the Christian Theological Academy in Warsaw. In 2015 he returned to the position of full professor at the Faculty of Educational Sciences of the University of 艁贸d藕, where he heads the Department of Theory of Education. Since 2010, Professor 艢liwerski has also been employed at the Department of General Pedagogy of the Maria Grzegorzewska University in Warsaw, where since 2019 he has held the position of research professor. Since 2019 he has been a member of the International Board of Tomas Bata University in Zl铆n, and since 2025 a member of the International Board of the Faculty of Education at the University of South Bohemia in 膶esk茅 Bud臎jovice.
In 1985 he defended his doctoral dissertation entitled Methodological Aspects of Scientific Inquiry into the Essence of Self-Education, written under the supervision of Professor Karol Kot艂owski, and obtained the degree of Doctor of Humanities at the Faculty of Philosophy and History of the University of 艁贸d藕. In June 1992 he completed his habilitation at the Faculty of Education of the University of Warsaw, receiving in 1993 the degree of Doctor Habilitatus in Humanities in the field of pedagogy, with a specialization in general pedagogy. Following his habilitation, he was entrusted at the University of 艁贸d藕 with the task of establishing the Department of Theory of Education, which he headed until 2007. In 1999, the President of the Republic of Poland conferred on him the title of Professor of Humanities. In the years 1999鈥2002 he was a member of the Senate of the University of 艁贸d藕, and in the years 2010鈥2015 a member of the Senate of the Christian Theological Academy in Warsaw.
Professor 艢liwerski was appointed four times to the Central Commission for Academic Degrees and Titles, serving in the terms 2007鈥2010, 2011鈥2012, 2013鈥2016, and 2017鈥2020. In 2011鈥2012 he served as Deputy Chair of Section I for the Humanities and Social Sciences of the Central Commission, and in 2013鈥2016 he was Chair of that Section and a member of the Presidium of the Central Commission. In 2019 he was elected a member of the first term of the Council of Scientific Excellence, and in 2023 he was elected for the second term of that body.
Since 2007 he has served as Vice-Chair of the Committee on Pedagogical Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences, and in 2010 he was elected Chair of the Committee, a function he performed for two terms until 2019. In 2024 he was appointed Honorary Chair of the Committee on Pedagogical Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Within the Polish Academy of Sciences, he also participated in expert teams preparing reports on the state of education and academic training. He served as Chair of the Integration and Expert Team for Pedagogy and Education of the Polish Academy of Sciences at Division I of the Academy (2009鈥2010); as a member of the expert team of Division I of the Polish Academy of Sciences, chaired by Professor Jerzy Wilkin, preparing a report of the scientific community of the Academy on the role of education in European integration and Poland鈥檚 place in this process (2018); and as a member of the Committee for the Development of National Education, chaired by Professor Zbigniew Kwieci艅ski, at Division I of the Polish Academy of Sciences (2012鈥2014). In 2021 he was again appointed as an expert of the Polish Accreditation Committee.
In the years 1997鈥2003, Professor 艢liwerski chaired, at the General Council for Higher Education, the team responsible for preparing the 鈥淢inimum Curricular Requirements for Master鈥檚 and Professional Studies in Pedagogy鈥. In the years 2000鈥2008 he served as an expert of the University Accreditation Commission, and in 2002 he was appointed a member of the State Accreditation Committee, working within the Team for Social and Legal Sciences. Until 2018 he served as an expert of the Polish Accreditation Committee. In 2004, the Minister of Science and Higher Education appointed Professor 艢liwerski as an expert of the Psychology and Pedagogy Section (H01F) within the Humanities Team (H-1) at the Department of Scientific Policy Instruments of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. After the establishment of the National Science Centre, he was involved in the evaluation of applications for research funding in pedagogy within the HS6 panel. He was also appointed by the Minister of Science and Higher Education for the 2007鈥2010 term as a member of the specialist team for the evaluation of scientific journals for the purposes of parametric assessment.
For sixteen years Professor 艢liwerski has been a full member of the 艁贸d藕 Scientific Society, where for twenty years he has served as an expert on the Jury of the Professor Irena Lepalczyk Award for the best scholarly works in social pedagogy. Since 2023 he has also been a member, at the University of 艁贸d藕, of the Jury of the Professor Ryszard Wi臋ckowski Award.
Professor Bogus艂aw 艢liwerski has supervised 23 doctoral dissertations in pedagogy, including four dissertations written in Czech as part of international doctoral studies at the University of Lower Silesia in Wroc艂aw. He has served as a reviewer in 71 doctoral proceedings, 97 habilitation proceedings, and 26 proceedings for the conferment of the title of professor, including international proceedings: three applications for the title of professor at Charles University in Prague and one at the University of Trnava. He has also served as a reviewer in three proceedings for the award of the title of doctor honoris causa.
As a result of his interventions and research conducted for the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, the Committee on Pedagogical Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences, and the Central Commission for Academic Degrees and Titles, he contributed to the annulment of the bilateral agreement between the Republic of Poland and the Slovak Republic. His analyses documented the pathological phenomenon of 鈥渉abilitation tourism鈥 involving Polish academics obtaining habilitation degrees at Slovak universities in the years 2004鈥2016.
In the years 1990鈥1995, Professor 艢liwerski initiated a nationwide movement of pedagogical innovation among primary school teachers in Poland, developed within the framework of so-called 鈥渆xperimental classes鈥. This initiative was based on a pedagogical experiment conducted jointly with his late wife, Wies艂awa 艢liwerska. In Pre拧ov, Slovakia, as many as 56 experimental classes were established according to his concept.
In the years 1996鈥1998, he co-authored a report on educational policy in the Warsaw-Centre municipality, and in 2009 he conducted research on educational policy in the municipality of Konstantyn贸w 艁贸dzki, preparing a strategy for the development of local education for the local government. Since 2000, he has served as an expert of the Ministry of National Education on teachers鈥 professional promotion. He twice chaired the Jury of the Ministry of National Education competition for the best preschool education programme in 2009, and in 2010 he prepared an expert report for the Ministry on the quality of accreditation of teacher training institutions in Poland.
In the years 2011鈥2013, he conducted nationwide research demonstrating the lack of democratization in public education. From 2006 to 2018 he chaired, and from 2018 to 2023 he served as Deputy Chair of, the Social and Advisory Council of the 艁贸d藕 Centre for Teacher Development and Practical Training in 艁贸d藕.
