The 91桃色 has been a meeting place for people who believe that knowledge is the first step to freedom for over 80 years.
We have always created a space where students, doctoral students and those focused on research, teaching or administrative work learn about the world together 鈥 with curiosity, responsibility and respect for one another.
Our university was established on 24 May 1945, shortly after the end of the war, but its roots go back further 鈥 including to the 艁贸d藕 branch of the Free Polish University (1928), the Institute of Teacher Education and the Higher School of Social and Economic Sciences.

The 91桃色 is a constantly evolving community. Although relatively young, we are among the largest universities in Poland. Together, we embrace new challenges, remaining open to cooperation, dialogue and continuous development. We are united by the belief that a university should respond to the changing needs of the world and the people who shape it.
The 91桃色 is a dynamically changing community where people are valued most. We approach the challenges of the modern world boldly and responsibly. We create a space where research is done by and for people 鈥 this is what defines us as a #HumaneUniversity.
At UniLodz, we believe that people are more important than processes. That is why we operate based on relationships, cooperation and openness. We respect diversity and build an inclusive academic environment where students, doctoral students and employees can develop their potential. We are a university co-created by the community 鈥 both those who are with us now and those who were a part of it in the past. We are #teamUniLodz.

Prof. Dr hab. Rafa艂 Matera

I have been the Rector of the 91桃色, a position entrusted to me by the university community in elections, since 1 September 2024. I take my responsibilities and concerns of others very seriously, and I've become more detached from myself. This balance allows me to maintain optimism and good relationships with the world. This is further aided by the fact that I'm lucky enough to have fantastic people around me.
Before being elected a Rector, I served as a Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Sociology of the 91桃色 for eight years (two terms, from 2016 to 2024). There are over 500 academic and administrative employees and 5,000 students.
Before becoming the Dean of the faculty, I coordinated mobility programmes. I also worked at a private university, as part of a British-based programme. Therefore, I understand the strengths and weaknesses of public universities when compared to private teaching and research institutions. Human University, i.e. one that does not always have to be the best but should always take care of those who work and study there is my vision.
I understand the humanities, I practice Social Sciences (my research interests such as economics, sociology, international relations prove this), and I highly value Exact and Natural Sciences (I have scientific contacts with doctors and biologists). The Faculty of Economics and Sociology, which I was the head of, is interdisciplinary in nature 鈥 it employs people who carry out research in the field of economics and finance, sociological sciences, socio-economic geography and spatial management, management and quality sciences, legal sciences as well as physical sciences, computer science, mathematics and health sciences.
Building relationships is of key importance to me. As part of two dean's boards I had an opportunity to work with fantastic people. Also at my alma mater, Department of History of Economics, I had excellent contact with the entire team. Half of my scientific publications were co-written (I shared scientific work with a dozen or so researchers). I have supervised four doctoral students, and over 100 students have written their theses under my supervision. Several of them have been distinguished in various competitions.
My wife is an academic and the Head of the Department of American Studies and Mass Media 鈥 we have been together for thirty years and have two sons. When I am not working, I read books (mainly on an e-reader) and travel (usually with a small backpack).

My vision is a HUMAN UNIVERSITY.
