From Türkiye to ódź – Two Academic Cultures
International Talks by EkSoc is a podcast hosted by Dr Aygün Kam, an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Economics and Sociology at the University of ódź. In the first episode, he talks to Prof. Ali Serhan Tarkan, a researcher at the University of ódź’s Department of Ecology and Vertebrate Zoology, whose academic journey connects Türkiye and Poland.
The episode, titled From Türkiye to ódź: How Culture Shapes Academic and Business Life, explores the experience of navigating two different cultural and academic environments. Prof. Tarkan discusses working in an international research community, building academic collaborations and making ódź his home while maintaining research ties with Türkiye.
The conversation also examines how cultural differences influence everyday communication, professional practices and interpersonal relationships. Another topic is the comparison of academic positions and experiences: what does it mean to be a professor in Türkiye and an associate professor in Poland?
It is a conversation about differences that can surprise us, as well as shared experiences that help us build understanding across borders.
