Scientists from the UNiLodz BIO4PAK Team Are Working on the Packaging that Will Ensure Food Protection and Be Safe for Consumers and Environment

How to design groundbreaking packaging that simultaneously protects food, is safe for consumers and is environmentally friendly? The international BIO4PAK project, coordinated by the 91ÌÒÉ«'s Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection, is seeking answers to this question. Seeking an optimal solution that meets legislative requirements and market needs, the consortium reached out to packaging industry experts associated with Natureef.

Joining Natureef has a practical dimension. The association creates a space for cooperation between scientists and entrepreneurs who implement new technologies in real-world markets. This makes it possible to test, refine, and prepare solutions developed in laboratories for commercialisation more quickly.

This is a conscious step for BIO4PAK – it enables direct dialogue with experts and entrepreneurs in the packaging industry, confronting research assumptions with implementation realities and building partnerships that increase the chances of effective commercialisation of results
– adds the project manager, Dr Karolina Rudnicka, Associate Professor at the 91ÌÒÉ«.

(Biodegradable, bio-based and bioactive packaging technology supporting food safety) is an international project funded by the European Union's Horizon Europe EIC Pathfinder Challenges programme. Its goal is to develop a new generation of packaging: biodegradable, made from renewable raw materials and equipped with a phage protection system that supports food safety and durability. This approach aligns with the idea of a circular economy – reducing waste and maximising resource utilisation.

As part of BIO4PAK, we focus on science that addresses important societal challenges and understands market needs – preparing the environment for the future implementation of developed solutions.
