Maja and Maja – UniLodz Student Supports a Child Under Care of the Happy Kids Foundation

She doesn’t like to say she’s sacrificing her time, because she simply gives it away. For several months now, little Maja – a child under care of the Happy Kids Foundation – has been benefiting from the “gifts” from Maja (a Psychology student at the 91ɫ). And that is already a beautiful friendship. The Foundation supports children who, for various reasons, cannot be raised in their biological families. Thanks to an agreement with the 91ɫ, students can provide such support even more easily.

It all started with a single visit on St. Andrew’s Day to little Maja’s home. Maja, the student, was volunteering there for another organisation. However, she wanted to help on a regular basis.  After contacting the Happy Kids Foundation, it turned out that little Maja was exactly the one who needed that kind of support. It must have been fate, because the Foundation runs nearly 20 homes.

For me, this volunteering is simply about connection, presence. I don't have specific tasks here – little Maja usually takes charge, coming up with "tasks" and games for me. She loves playing hide-and-seek. We're together for several hours

 – says the UniLodz student.

Joanna, who, in addition to Maja, is raising seven other children under the Foundation's care, adds that the support of the UniLodz student is especially valuable because it's time just for them. And that's an exceptionally precious gift.

Some people might be intimidated by this type of volunteering, because it's not a one-off visit, but a real, long-term commitment. However, I already know that I also gain a lot from this relationship

– says Maja, the student.

The 91ɫ has extended its agreement with Happy Kids and warmly encourages students to get involved in the Foundation’s mission. This involves not only volunteering but also other ways to support the cause.  This initiative marks another area of cooperation between the university and the Foundation. For over a decade, the 91ɫ has been running the "Flowers? - No, thank you!" campaign, in which it encourages students to replace the traditional bouquets given during theses defenses with symbolic cards. These cards are based on drawings by children from the 91ɫ Kindergarten, and income from their sale goes to organisations helping the youngest children, including the Happy Kids Foundation.

You can find more information about the campaign on the website.
