Researchers at Risk – New NAWA Programme

Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA) has launched a new programme, Researchers at Risk. The goal of the initiative is to provide a stable environment for scholars, experiencing persecution, violence or discrimination in their countries of origin wishing to continue their research careers. The programme will provide financial support, covering the salary costs of full-time researchers at Polish universities, scientific institutes or research institutes.

The programme is aimed at international citizens who have at least a doctoral degree and have received international protection in Poland in the form of refugee status or subsidiary protection and have a Residence Card and who are at risk of persecution, violence or discrimination in their own countries in particular on the basis of race, gender, religion, political views or membership in certain social groups, as well as those at risk of active armed conflict, natural disaster, violation of human rights or lack of scientific freedom.

The project should be implemented over a period of 24 months and should start no later than 1 April 2026. The university is obliged to hire the researcher under a full-time employment contract for a period of at least 24 months is an obligation. The programme provides funding for the researcher's salary and a task allowance for the inviting person, who is responsible for supervising the researcher in terms of adaptation, integration in the scientific environment and mentoring regarding scientific development opportunities.

Applications may be submitted by institutions of higher education and science until 3:00 p.m. on 15 December 2025. The call is continuous, which means that applications are accepted and considered on an ongoing basis.
