Award for the Authors of “Lexicon of the Łódź Ghetto”

The anniversary ceremony took place at the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw. The event was organised by the Association of the Jewish Historical Institute of Poland, the weekly magazine “Polityka”, and the POLIN Museum. During the gala, the Marian Turski Indifferent Fund Awards as well as special distinctions within the “Polityka” Historical Awards were presented.

On the occasion of the centenary of Marian Turski’s birth – the originator and long-standing chair of the “Polityka” Historical Awards – the jury chaired by Prof. Wiesław Władyka decided to grant two special awards. They were awarded to Hanna Krall, one of the most outstanding representatives of Polish reportage, as well as to Dr Adam Sitarek and Dr Ewa Wiatr – editors of “Lexicon of the Łódź Ghetto”.

Success of the Centre For Jewish Studies and the Faculty of Philosophy and History

Dr Adam Sitarek and Dr Ewa Wiatr are researchers at the Philip Friedman Centre for Jewish Studies at the 91ɫ, operating within the Faculty of Philosophy and History of the 91ɫ. For years, the Centre has been conducting research on the history and culture of Jews, with particular emphasis on the history of the Jewish community in Łódź and the region, as well as the history of the Holocaust. The distinction awarded is an expression of recognition for the authors’ research achievements, as well as for the scholarly activity carried out at the Centre and the Faculty.

The awarded “Lexicon of the Łódź Ghetto”, prepared by Adam Sitarek and Ewa Wiatr in cooperation with Izabela Terela and published by the Lodz University Press, constitutes an extensive compendium of knowledge on the history of the Łódź ghetto. The publication includes hundreds of entries devoted to people, places, institutions and events connected with the functioning of the ghetto, as well as a chronological account of its history, maps, and a list of streets with both pre-war and occupation-era names. It is one of the most important contemporary studies devoted to the history of Litzmannstadt Ghetto.

In Tribute To Marian Turski

The gala formed part of the celebrations marking the 100th anniversary of the birth of Marian Turski – a historian, journalist, long-time editor of the weekly “Polityka”, co-creator of the POLIN Museum and a guardian of the memory of the Holocaust. The programme of the ceremony was enriched by a concert performed by cellist Dobrawa Czocher, and participants also had the opportunity to listen to memories shared by Joanna Turska, Marian Turski’s daughter.

We would like to extend our sincere congratulations to Dr Adam Sitarek, Dr Ewa Wiatr and Izabela Terela on receiving this prestigious distinction.
