We are pleased to announce that Dr Patrycja Grzyś from the Faculty of Geographical Sciences, 91ɫ has been awarded First Prize in the Konrad Czapiewski Competition for the best doctoral thesis in the field of spatial management, organised by the Committee for Spatial Economy and Regional Planning of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

The awarded dissertation, entitled "Wpływ nieformalnych inicjatyw obywatelskich na kształtowanie przestrzeni miejskiej. Przykład Łodzi” [The impact of informal civic initiatives on the shaping of urban space. The case of Łódź], was prepared at the 91ɫ under the supervision of Prof. dr hab. Marcin Wójcik and dr hab. Paulina Tobiasz-Lis, Associate Professor at the 91ɫ.

The dissertation addresses the issue of the role of informal civic initiatives in the processes of co-creating and shaping urban space. Using the example of Łódź, the Author analyses the activity of informal groups, their relations with local government institutions, and the impact of grassroots social actions on transformations of urban space. The research results indicate that these initiatives play a significant role in shaping public spaces, strengthening civic engagement, and building co-responsibility for urban development.
