From Discussions to Joint Research Initiatives

The first discussions took place during a meeting in May with dr inż. Anna Rucińska and the team of the PAS Botanical Garden, represented also by Dr Anna Znój and Dr Marcin Kotowski. The visit to Powsin provided an opportunity not only to learn more about the activities of one of Poland’s leading institutions dedicated to the conservation of plant resources and biodiversity, but also to exchange experiences and identify potential areas for joint research activities.

The discussions continued during the June meeting of the Business Council at the Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection, 91ÌÒÉ«. As a result of both meetings, an initial framework for cooperation was developed, covering environmental and experimental research initiatives.

The planned activities will focus, among other things, on:

• research into the diversity of Poland’s flora using DNA barcoding methods;
• molecular analyses of plant habitat diversity and plant responses to stress factors;
• molecular characterisation of populations of selected plant species, with particular emphasis on protected species and species associated with protected areas;
• research on traditional pastoralism through molecular analyses of dietary composition;
• analyses concerning the molecular foundations of ecological compensation measures.

Partnership Strengthening Research Potential

The joint initiatives will bring together the scientific expertise of the Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection, 91ÌÒÉ«, and the PAS Botanical Garden’s experience in biodiversity conservation, plant research and the management of natural resources. Such partnerships are of particular importance in the face of contemporary environmental challenges, as they enable research to be conducted on a larger scale, across a broader scope, and with significant practical applications.

The Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection, 91ÌÒÉ«, was represented by dr hab. Dorota Rybaczek, Associate Professor at the 91ÌÒÉ«, and Dr Grzegorz ToÅ„czyk, who serve as Faculty Ambassadors for 91ÌÒÉ« with the Socio-Economic Environment, as well as by dr hab. Tomasz Jurczak, Associate Professor at the 91ÌÒÉ«, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection for 91ÌÒÉ« with the Socio-Economic Environment.

Representatives of both institutions unanimously emphasise that this is only the beginning of their joint activities. Further meetings have already been scheduled, with the aim of refining the directions of cooperation and preparing shared research initiatives.

We believe that combining the knowledge, experience and infrastructure of both institutions will result in projects that contribute to a better understanding and more effective protection of Poland’s natural heritage.
