Summer School “Crossing Regions, Shaping Lives: African Migration Corridors in Global Perspective”

We would like to invite you to the summer school organised by the UNIC Alliance partner Koç University, Boston University Center on Forced Displacement, which will be held from 7 to 12 September 2026, at the Rumelifeneri campus in Istanbul. Application deadline is 22 May 2022.

Who can participate?

The summer school is designed for graduate students and dcotoral students, early career researchers. Participants who successfully complete the programme will be awarded 3 ECTS credits. 

The main theme of the summer school

The summer school dedicated to Africa and migration offers an interdisciplinary perspective on migration dynamics through the lens of migration corridors. The programme brings together historical and contemporary perspectives as well as diverse research methods, highlighting Africa’s role as a key research laboratory for mobility studies.

Funding

The full fee for the programme is EUR 1250. The fee covers all course materials, social activities, field trips, two meals (breakfast and lunch) a day and coffee breaks on lecture days, campus accommodation (fee without accommodation is EUR 900 ).  

For the 91ɫ students and doctoral students selected to participate, the costs will be covered in the form of a scholarship. The scholarship covers: 

  • Travel costs – lump sum of PLN 2000
  • Subsistence costs – PLN 300/day
  • Additional scholarship – PLN 75/day for students or PLN 125 /day for doctoral students
  • The 91ɫ will also cover the cost of participation in the programme (without accommodation). 
     

The selection of the successful applicant who will receive funding for participation in summer school will be made on the basis of the application documents, in cooperation with the coordinators of the summer school from Koc University.

Programme of the summer school 

The programme of the summer school implements the following learning outcomes:

Knowledge 

  • advanced knowledge of African migration from historical, contemporary, and comparative perspectives, including intra‑African mobility and Africa’s connections with other world regions;
  • understanding of the concept of migration corridors and its relevance for analyzing the spatial, social, and institutional mechanisms of mobility. 

Skills

  • ability to apply the migration corridor approach to the analysis of migration processes using interdisciplinary and mixed research methods;
  • ability to critically interpret migration policies, mobility regimes, and migrants’ experiences;
  • ability to present and discuss research findings or professional experience in an international and interdisciplinary environment. 

Attitudes / Social Competences 

  • demonstration of a critical, reflexive and ethically sensitive approach to migration research;
  • openness to interdisciplinary dialogue and cooperation with researchers and practitioners representing diverse perspectives and world regions.
     

The mobility will be financed from the budget of the project ‘We are UNIC!’ funded by the European Union under the programme "Support for European University Alliances", NAWA project FERS.01.05-IP.08-0219/23,EU's funding amount PLN 62,505,297.60.
