Abstrakt: This talk is in connection with the Hugo Steinhaus award so I will present my scientific journey which led to obtaining this distinction. My journey started before the year 2000 when one reviewer of my theoretical proposal wrote a comment which put me into tears at that time but marked the beginning of something new: research on optimal control applied to cancer. In the therapies for any disease, cancer in particular, the natural questions are: how much, how often and in what order should the drugs be given. We tried to answer them with the tools of optimal control, and it turned out to be a challenging but exciting journey. I will walk through the main or most interesting stages of our work, starting from simple cell cycle specific models for chemotherapy to models for antiangiogenic inhibitors and immunotherapy to combination treatments and metronomic protocols. On this journey I will focus on interactions and connections with medicine and the medical world, in particular describing my collaboration with pharmaceutical company Bristol-Myers-Squibb. I will finish with our most recent work on modeling of Alzheimer鈥檚 disease which could be the beginning of something new.
